Erik Varszegi, a Master Builder with the Lego Group in Billund, Denmark has created a new element this year that is a curved slope. It lets Lego users create more slanted forms while staying within the company’s strict color palette. The slopes can be used to create more dynamic shapes, like a curving staircase.

Some Lego sets are the result of the work of professional designers and some are the result of the popular Lego Ideas program. The Ideas line lets anyone create a set, and it’s also possible to produce. It grants fame and one percent of sales for any designer who convinces 10,000 other designers that their creation deserves to be produced. It’s not surprising that the most elaborate and stunning sets tend to get the most support, especially when they are based on iconic characters or scenes from films or television shows, or in real life.
